A Smiling Rachel Hylton

Rachel Hylton is the newly discovered star of the popular ITV Show, The X Factor. Much has been made of her past but we intend to focus on her future. A future that we believe will be a fantastic one!

Even after just one episode, there’s one name on everyone’s lips, Rachel Hylton. Tipped to be one of the favourites, Rachel is certainly a Star in our eyes.

Rachel performed the Amy Winehouse hit, No Good, but was quick to quip “It doesn’t mean that I am no good”. Whilst on the surface a throw-away innocent comment, there was so much more behind the statement.

Rachel has a rather complicated story. She became pregnant at a young age and had her first child at the tender age of thirteen. Shortly after, she began taking drugs, and after having had a further two children she found herself with a drug related prison sentence.

On the show, she told Dermot, “It was only after I had my last two kids that I stopped and changed my life. I’m more focussed on music. I’ve always sung, but in the past few years I’ve said enough is enough. I need a better life for me and my kids”.

She added, “I do get embarrassed about my past, but I do want much better. I think this is an opportunity to turn my life around in a big way”.

At the auditions, Rachel impressed all four of the judges with Louis calling her a diamond in the rough. The ever incisive Simon Cowell told her, “I absolutely love you, love you. You’re fantastic. A breath of fresh air. And my favourite audition so far”.

Whilst Rachel’s past may be one that many of us don’t recognise, her future is undoubtedly one of success - both within the competition and beyond.

I think Rachel is absolutely fabulous, and I too love her. I will be routing for her to win the X Factor competition, shes another Amy Winehouse. I wish her a great career, and send all my love.

  2. Trevor Horsley on August 23rd, 2008 9:58 pm

I think she is really good but needs her own style pity she didn’t come around before Amy Winehouse

  3. Rachel Hylton Team on August 24th, 2008 5:53 am

Trevor - to be fair to Rachel, we’ve only heard her sing one song so far and it just happened to be an Amy Winehouse song. As we hear more, we will hopefully start to hear her own style.

  4. siya on August 24th, 2008 4:45 pm

  10. Lauren on September 18th, 2008 6:38 am

I’ve watched this audition a gazillion times. I live in the U.S. so I can’t know when the x-factor is on. i check daily to see if any new updates have arrived. all i have to say is this woman is amazing and i think she sounds like i like her.

  11. Geoff T on September 27th, 2008 8:35 pm

i think she is an arrogant person who needs to shut her mouth and listen more to good advice given to her……i am really not a fan of her and i hope that she doesnt get far in the show…….there are alot better singers out there then her…..GET HER OFF……….

  12. gilyat on September 27th, 2008 11:17 pm

Rachel, you have a fantastic voice, (far better than Amy Winehouse) but I just knew you would spout off at the judges at one point. I really think you can win the Xfactor, and have all your dreams come true, IF ONLY YOU WOULD TRY NOT TO ANSWER THE JUDGES (or indeed anybody) BACK OR BE SO DEFENSIVE. BE HUMBLE IN YOUR APPROACH, SAY “THANK YOU” AND NOTHING ELSE! AND I’M CERTAIN YOU WILL WIN. THESE PEOPLE ARE EXPERTS, WHAT THEY SAY TO YOU IS CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. I really would love to see you win, SIMON.S ADVICE TO YOU AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS EXCELLENT. TAKE HEED!

  13. Dominic on September 28th, 2008 12:22 am

Rachel Hylton is the next big thing! I think she’s 100% sexy, 100% fantastic personality, 100% amazing voice…….And i want her to WIN the X FACTOR!

Let’s hear her do some Funky Soul and R&B Singing!

  14. Lea on September 28th, 2008 12:41 am

She was alright but nothin special. There were other much better singers than her - pity the sob story is gong to carry her through over more deserving ppl. Hope she doesn’t win on the back of it - bit gobby.

  15. Geoff T on September 28th, 2008 6:27 pm

i agree with lea, she has given a sob story about her life in the past and the public will vote for her (if she gets through)…..lets hope not….. lots of people have hard lives….much harder than what she has had and they get through it……what makes her so special…..ok she can sing but there are alot better people of there who can sing alot alot more better then what she can sing…….i just dont like her and i know there are alot of people out there who feel the same as me……she is nothing special really……DONT LET HER WIN……. Vote for the great singers, the ones who can sing and will be able to make a proper career out of singing……PUT HER OUT OF HER MISERY NOW AND GET HER OFF………

  16. Emma on September 28th, 2008 6:44 pm

Shes awesome! i absolutley love her. i hope shes going to get through to the finals and (hopefully) win :) i think amy winehouse is amazing and she has a really distictive voice just like her.

  17. Joanna on September 28th, 2008 8:40 pm

Rachel has the drive and determination to win, if she can come off drugs and turn her live around then that proves she has the strength. she has the best voice too I really hope she wins, but she needs to learn to take on board what the judges say without getting defensive. Agree with simon ,just take it on board because they are trying to help.

  18. Tim Beckerley on September 29th, 2008 5:45 am

Rachel, you have a great voice but your attitude leaves much to be desired.
Ranting at the judges in your first Boot Camp performance was appalling - you behaved as if you were the only one who had to work hard at their performance. It shows a lack of consideration both for the judges and for your fellow contestants.
I hope the tabloid stories about your vindictive nature are just that - stories. Call me old fashioned, but only talented people with good character truly deserve to win the X Factor

  19. Debbie on September 30th, 2008 7:44 pm

Rachel has a real gift. I have been listening over and over again to her boot camp audition, especially with the music mixed in by MagicAl. I feel really moved everytime. I love her singing. She has such soul. She has really grown on me and I hope she wins. I would definitely buy her records. Rachel if you read this website, ignore any negative comments as they are from people who are jealous and need to pursue their own dreams. You are gifted, Keep humble and you will succeed. Also make a recording of the snow patrol boot camp song when you get a recording contract, it is so moving. lol.

  20. Jacqui Corcoran on October 1st, 2008 12:37 pm

Rachel Hylton to WIN! AMAZING voice & the best bit about her is her past. From the hardest ground, the best flowers grow and Rachel’s singing depth is due to her hardship. I just hope the show doesn’t mould her into the shape of the best singers of the past; she is unique and I hope she stays that way. Can’t wait to buy the album…

  21. NJ on October 1st, 2008 6:57 pm

Rachel, even though youve had a mis-guided past it helps to make you who you are today, and youl continue to learn. Good for you girl, amazing voice and absolutely gorgeous. Id love to see Rachel live or get to meet her.

Well done, about time you were recognised for the right youve done instead of the wrong. Much Love Nj

  22. Nuno on October 1st, 2008 7:52 pm

Rachel you have a true gift.
Your performance was inspired and gave me goosebumps.
Believe in yourself and most importantly trust in your god given talent, he won’t let you down!
The only limit is your imagination and the only person who can hold you back is you, so be strong and persevere.
I wish you all the best and am rooting for you!
    Peace and Love,
    Nuno

  23. Nighthawk on October 1st, 2008 8:15 pm

Rachel Hylton is a disgrace. She’s a cocky, arrogant, self-centered convicted criminal. She is exactly the type of person who personifies “the UK’s broken society”.

Why is it that she gets all this attention when other decent, law-abiding contestants with far more talent get none. This is a sad indictment of the country in its present state.

  24. tina on October 2nd, 2008 7:27 am

Rachel - yes you have a brilliant voice but the ex factor want more than a good voice. They need to be a role model for the people and to be this you truly have to calm the attitude down. Dont spoil it for yourself.

And i am not a vindictive jealous person as i have a relative in a similar situation to how Rachel used to be and hope that one day they can turn the tables as Rachel as done - all credit to you girl.

Just calm your arrogance and aggression (as at bootcamp) and put that energy into your singing.

  25. linda on October 4th, 2008 5:43 pm

    she talks too much!!

  26. sal on October 4th, 2008 10:32 pm

u have a fantastic voice wish u all the well 4 the future.

  27. Lizzy on October 26th, 2008 8:45 am

You have a powerful voice; but your appeal is much more than that – you have an openness and energy that transcends the everyday. Suffering and hope entwined in a commanding force that makes me feel so good to be alive. Thank YOU!

  28. Diane on October 26th, 2008 4:36 pm

Wow you were fantasic and looked so good. Who made your green dress. Please put some photos on your site. My friend is getting married and would love something similar. All the very best

  32. lillian on November 9th, 2008 1:01 am

    Rachel

I really like your voice. I think of TIna Turner or Janis Joplin; they had their own voices and their music worked with their voice… Remember to be your own person and not try to fit into the lollipop acts/music as you seem to be either forced to or think you need to. and you will be fine in my opinion. We need someone with a different voice.
Don’t lose yourself and get that confidence back girl….

  33. Louise on November 12th, 2008 8:28 pm

Rachel had a fairly good voice in the auditions and in the boot camp. However she completely let herself down with her bad attitude and unwillingness to “take on board” any criticism. Since then I have been appalled to hear about her past and I believe that ITV should not condone this sort of behaviour by rewarding her with a place on the X Factor.
    Issues I have with this:
    - She is a poor role model for all young people and I am disgusted that ITV have allowed her to reach this stage of the competition.
    - She has been involved in drugs and crime
    - She has let her children be put into care
    - She is impolite and aggressive in nature

In order to work as a role model to young people (i.e. a teacher, care worker, youth group worker etc) you need to be CRB checked. I wonder what we would find if we CRB checked this young lady… The last thing this country needs is another bad role model.

  34. Deb on November 16th, 2008 1:38 am

Rachel - please don’t let people like Louise get you down. I think you have a rare talent, and the potential for a truly great vocal career. Your voice is unique, but the spirit of it echoes some of the best female singers we have had to date. Please please PLEASE listen to some of the great African female singers - (Miryam Makeba and Angelique Kidjo to name just 2) - and you’ll learn so much about YOU. I loved your rendition of ‘Feeling Good’, and think Etta James’ style really suited your voice. As a vocal tutor, I don’t think there will ever be a problem of your voice not being up to a song - but there may be a problem in the song not being good enough to showcase your fantastic power!! Keep on groovin’ mate - and pick the great, bluesy power-songs that will bring out the best in you. We are all behind you…..
    xxx

Rachel is one of my favorites, I think all of them are as equally talented but in different ways. Its really tough this year & if I am completely honest it’s been quite emotional lol

I think her voice is amazing, I also think she is not quite working the songs out right. I would love to hear her sing ‘No woman, no cry’ - Bob Marley!, personally.

All the best Rachel, you deserve it!!!!

  36. Carolyn on November 18th, 2008 9:35 pm

I adore your voice and your personality. I hope you win X Factor. I don’t know much about music but your voice reminds me of Tina Turner. Just read some other comments. Ditto on the Tina Turner. I see there are some jealous people who make nasty comments. It is only because they are not where you are and never will be. We all vote lots for you and whatever happens pleeeeeeeeeeez we want your music.

  37. Frank morgan on November 20th, 2008 8:32 am

well rachel your fanstatic i love you u deserve to win the x factor i wish you gud luck yeah

  38. Jan on November 22nd, 2008 11:11 pm

Rachel you don’t deserve to be voted off XFactor this week. Owen and Diana shouldn’t be in the same room as you. Your voice is rich and soulful you have a fantastic voice and personality and despite your former ‘life’ you deserve a break. I voted for you lots and lots and I would buy your albums. Don’t give up girl. Show the world what you’re made of. I wish you all the best x

  39. Vicky L Dolan on November 22nd, 2008 11:46 pm

I can’t believe you have been voted off the X-Factor you were my favourite. You have an amazing voice and I can’t wait for you to bring out and album so that I can buy it. Please record some songs soon………..Thanks Vicky

  40. Doreen on November 23rd, 2008 12:52 am

Sad to see you go tonight Rachel. You are an amazing person. What you have no one can take away from you. Whom God bless no one can curse. Therefore all those who have tried to curse you with their nasty and negative comments/words do not realize that they are only cursing themselves. Such sad people.

Good people out of the good treasures of their hearts bring forth that which is good. Evil people out of the evil treasures of their hearts bring forth that which is evil. From the abundance of the heart the mouth speak.

I hope that you will go on to do great things Rachel. Be good and God bless you.
All the best for your future. You have the power.

  41. David The Frenchy Boy on November 23rd, 2008 4:32 pm

I think you look like and sing like Tina Turner…

I wish you the very best and I believe in U!!!

By the way; Danni and U are amazing together…

    Love

Hi Rachel. What an incredible voice you have! You are a unique talent. You should still be in this competition. Every week I have looked forward to hearing what you were going to sing and how you would perform. I loved you final song and you were brilliant . you went out on a high note! We will wait on your album with great anticipation. You are a wonderful woman and I pray that you will have a good and happy life with your children. But keep on singing please. Dont give up.
    Best wishes,
Rosemary, Colin , Damien and family

  43. Nicky on November 23rd, 2008 5:29 pm

I think Rachel had the ‘X’ factor - I always looked forward to her performances and she sent a shiver down my spine as Rhydian Roberts did last year. I love her unique and soulfulvoice and think it is a travesty that she has been voted off as a result of negative media coverage and constant bad editing

  44. lovedoctor on November 25th, 2008 8:15 am

I don’t know if you will ever read this Ms Hylton but for those folk who know her and want what’s best for her read on your sound is some what Southern fusion, deep South, the heartland of the blues and prime breeding ground for rock ‘n’ roll and soul music…

Mississippi check out the vocal techniques from all the people from 20s 30s 40s Robert Johnson, Robert Lockwood, Jr, as well the electric style Little Milton, Lockwood, Waters, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson So many more

I think now you have one foot in the door so to speak try and get to meet Tina Turner she’s the one who could give you the best advice on coaching you & your voice, if you ask nicely tell her you would like to meet the cream of the crop “legends” to show you the ropes.

Think about whats happening with popular music its nothing new, music artist there taking the music from the 30s 40s 50s and replacing the lyrics with their own but really its still sounds plastic, I think with the right people along side you, you could be a real blues soul legend

P.S lie low for a year whilst you get everything under your wings get yourselves a real band hang out with the best soul & blues folk, start writing your own songs start to show some real emotion and JAM

say pole-low with a smile to tina from lovedoctor.

    goodluck *Rachel Hylton*
